Latin Ficus carica
Family Moraceae
History The first recorded planting of a Fig Tree in England was by Cardinal Pole in the garden of Lambeth Palace in 1552. Though in Tarring, Sussex they claim their many fig trees are descended from a tree planted by Thomas a Becket in 1162. The Fig orchard in Tarring is the largest ever planted in Britain and used to produce 1200 figs a day from August to October. You can visit this garden on the first Saturday of July
