Latin Ficus carica Family Moraceae History The first recorded planting of a Fig Tree in England was by Cardinal Pole in the garden of Lambeth Palace in 1552.  Though in Tarring, Sussex they claim their many fig trees are descended from a tree planted by Thomas a Becket in 1162.  The Fig orchard in Tarring is the largest ever planted in Britain and used to produce 1200 figs a day from August to October.  You can visit this garden on the first Saturday of July
