Grape

Latin Vitis vinifera Family Vitaceae Grape has been cultivated for the last 6-8000 years.  Again, it was the Romans who introduced vines and winemaking to Britain.  After the invasions of Germanic people, the vineyards were abandoned.  King Alfred is attributed to encouraging their revival as Christianity is re-established in the Islands.  The Doomsday Book records 42 vineyards in England.  Grapes were grown throughout the warm period of the next 300 years.  The Black Death saw a decline of grape growing in the country, till the late eighth century brought a revival with noblemen and botanists vying to grow the best grapes for wine and their tables.
