An Illustrated talk by Karen Wardley
This talk explores the subject of historical graffiti and asks “was it just pure vandalism or did it hold meaning and messages”?
The talk draws on eight years of survey work as part of the Hampshire Medieval Graffiti Project and puts this in a wider context, looking at findings ranging from masons’ marks to animal motifs, faces, names/dates, heraldic crests and building plans, through to purposeful protection marks against demons, witches and evil spirits!
Karen is co-ordinator of the HMGP, with a background in museum collections management and conservation. She is a Trustee of King John’s House and a Council member of Hampshire Field Club and Archaeology Society
